This shot of Cleopatra and Caesar at the "crowning" of Cleopatra is shot at eye level using a medium shot. The purpose of having the shot closer and eye level is because its trying to make it a intimate scene only between Caesar and Cleopatra and we are peeking in. They are having a conversation when she isn't supposed to be because of the ceremonial importance of the event but Caesar being of high rank breaks the rules and talks to her and the medium shot allows the intimacy of the conversation to be portrayed to the audience. Cleopatra is obviously the focus because the ceremony is for her but she is not in the middle of the screen it is split between them both showing their equal roles of importance. The colors are bright and vibrant, showing wealth and royalty with the golds and silvers as well as rich reds that make them stand out. The message of this scene is that although both Cleopatra and Caesar are of high importance in their own communities/societies they still have a almost hidden love that breaks out of those roles of "emperor" or "queen" and they can just act like normal people in love despite the fact that they have several responsibilities.

Along with them sharing the center of the shot, I noticed that they are also matching. Cleopatra's hat is the same red and gold as Caesar's armor and robes. This shows their equality.
ReplyDeleteVery nice, both of you! I love the ensuing scene where Cleo insists that Caesar too has to show her the respect due to a Pharao of Egypt and kneel in front of her (anathema to any Roman), like all the others, although on a little pillow ("You have such bony knees").
