The Incredible
Hulk is a modern day super hero that has appeared in movies in past
years as well as recently in The Avengers. Similar to that of Heracles,
his super power is strength but his strength is generated by his
transformation when angered into a huge, muscular, and uncontrollably
strong "hero". He is uncontrollable, trying to hurt or kill anyone in
his path including those that are fighting for the same cause or on his
team. Using his incredible strength he always seems to defeat the enemy
but also leaves a path of destruction and disarray even to those who are
innocent by standers. We still regard him as a super hero though with
little kids dressing up as him for Halloween or buying Hulk Smash Hands
so they can "be just like him". Our views of super heroes has not
changed. As long as they defeat the bad guy and achieve well-being for
the greater good the loss of "small" innocent lives is not that
important is a theme portrayed in both old hero stories as well as
modern day stories. We don't see funerals for those the Hulk injures or
kills at the end of the movie but just how great and heroic he is
because he got the job done and defeated the bad guy.

In the Marvel Universe the Hulk has wrecked Detroit (no great loss), Las Vegas (not enough though), and a little of New York. Hulk is a really weird hero. He's a violent monster that just wants to be left alone, and Bruce Banner is a walking mess of arrogance, conceitedness, and daddy issues. In the comics though Hulk has to fight heroes and villains who are trying to stop him or exploit him. At one point the Hulk wanted to destroy humanity, and at another point the illuminati (Iluminati!!!) Sent him into space. Should the Hulk be an Avenger?
ReplyDeleteHulk is always pictured as the good guy in the movies, but I like how you showed that he still has a lot of flaws that can hold back some of his potential. He can almost be the modern day Jekyl and Hyde, with a good side that wants peace while the other thirsts for violence.
ReplyDeleteHulk didn't wreck _enough_ of Las Vegas?!? Better be careful, we have two Nevadans in our class!
