Sign of the Cross was a fairly good movie. It did an excellent job evoking emotion from the audience. Scenes such as those in the arena when people had to fight for their lives, either with another human or with an animal, and the mass murdering of the Christians by Tigellinus’ men were prime examples of this in the way that characters were put in precarious positions that struck a chord with the audience. It was also an interesting depiction of how the Christians were persecuted and hunted down during the time period. Though the historical accounts of such treatment may not be entirely true, it was still an experience to have witnessed a depiction of what is known. The film also had some action with the various fights in the arena that made a rather depressing plot more exciting. I really enjoyed how sound played a huge role in the film through the songs of the Christians, particularly how they battled Ancaria’s lesbian dance and song. This rivalry added a level of intensity to the movie that made the “battle” go beyond the people and more toward a “battle” of wills, good v. evil. Overall, I really enjoyed the film; there were some really great things about it. Its depressing plot, however, wasn’t one that rested well with me.
You have many interesting points particularly about the arena scenes. While your view is valid I found the arena scenes horrifying rather than touching. I was repulsed not drawn in so in that way I suppose it alienated me as an audience member rather than struck a chord with me.
