I thought that the Sign of the Cross was a good movie. I may have thought, however, that the movie was good for different reasons than it was intended. I thought the movie was very funny, especially scenes like the last one where the two lovers walk up the stairs to be slaughtered by lions. I thought this scene was funny because of their "love" for each other. The two barely knew each other and the only reason they ended up together is because Marcus could not take the hint that Mercia loved Jesus more than him. It was also funny how Marcus converted to Christianity almost instantly. He knew nothing of it except what Mercia told him and he did only to spend eternity with her. This is borderline stalking. I mean what if Mercia realizes what a wacko this guy is, now thanks to Jesus she has to spend the rest of eternity telling his to bugger off. On a more serious note this movie was good for other reasons as well. The action was intense and gruesome. The acting was also enjoyable. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie for both the serious moments and the unintentional comedic moments.

I agree, the ending seems unintentionally comical to us. Quite a bit of intentional humor is spread out over the movie as well. Charles Laughton, in particular, really milks the character of Nero for laughs, but there are frequent comical interludes. Remember, for example, the cats lapping up Poppaea's milk bath, Glabrio teasing Marcus Superbus about his interest in a pretty Christian, the married couple fighting on the stairs of the arena over why the husband didn't buy better tickets, and the gladiator thumbing his nose at his opponent?
